Overview
What's the matter, son? Ya don't like the feel of that breeze? The popping and flickering of the flames. The rustling of the trees. The smell of the earth. Ain't so bad sometimes to shut off your brain and give yourself over to your senses.
— Mr. Green to Damian Desmond[1]

Mr. Green (グリーン先生, Gurīn-sensei?) is a custos of Eden Academy and a former member of the Ostanian navy. Contrary to his intimidating appearance, Green is a kind man, and is popular with the students.

After the Imperial Scholars mixer, he is assigned to take Damian Desmond, Ewen Egeburg, and Emile Elman on a field research trip after Henry Henderson "punishes" them to help Damian take a break from constant studying.

Appearance[]

Green appears to be a middle-aged man. He has a small patch of slicked back dirty blond hair on his head. Green is tall and has a robust body, giving off an intimidating appearance. Adding to his look is a large scar over his nose and left eye, which Green wears an eyepatch over, along with three horizontal scars on his chin. He also has a few X-shaped scars on his arms. Green typically wears a white dress shirt with rolled sleeves, a red tie, black pants with a belt, and brown boots.

Personality[]

Mr. Green advising Damian to let loose

Green helps Damian learn to let loose

Despite his intimidating appearance, Green is a genuine and kind person[2], making him a popular staff member with the students[3]. He is also light-hearted and enjoys making jokes with the students and fellow staff members. As a counselor, Green can be very empathetic, as he is able to understand the feelings of students when they have troubles and gives them advice on how to deal with it, like when he helped Damian learn to occasionally let loose and later taught his friends Ewen and Emile how to deal with their jealousy when they believed Damian had another friend. Green appears to enjoy working with the young students and is supportive of their dreams for the future, believing it is a wonderful thing to devote oneself to a goal, though sometimes he will interject if the goal, like Emile wanting to eat lots of candy, is questionable. He also finds them and their odd behaviors endearing.

History[]

Green is a former member of the Ostanian navy. At some point after his service, he joined Eden Academy's staff as a custos.

Synopsis[]

Midterm Exams Arc[]

After the midterm exams, Green accompanies two teachers as they put away the first-years' exams into a vault at the school's North Hall.[4]

Imperial Scholars Mixer Arc[]

Mr. Green teases Damian's dazing

Green teases Damian's dazing

During the holiday after the Imperial Scholars mixer, Green helps the dorm mother of Cecile Hall's boy's dormitory with hanging the laundry outside, where she is also assisted by Damian Desmond, who has been punished by Henry after oversleeping. He is later joined by his friends Ewen and Emile, and the adults watch as the boys start goofing around instead of working. Green notices Damian looking up at the sky in a daze and jokes that the boy has the face of someone who would rather be at a picnic, which an embarrassed Damian denies. Henry then decides to give the boys a new punishment, telling them to go on a field research trip with Green.

Episode 27-6

Green helps the boys prepare to go fishing

Green takes the now-frantic boys on a fast-paced canoe ride on a river and assures them they will be okay, citing his past in the navy. He also tells them to help steer the canoe and says exercise is good for their brains. When Damian falls off the canoe after they drop into a lower part of the river, Green watches as Ewen and Emile jump out to rescue him despite being unable to swim. He interrupts their touching moment to sacrifice themselves for Damian as he points out that the water is shallow, which embarrasses the boys. After starting a warm fire on land, Green instructs the boys to catch some fish for dinner. With Green's help, the friends prepare to fish. While looking for bait, Green watches Ewen and Emile playfully chase around a terrified Damian with worms. Later, the boys start fishing and successfully catch fish for each of them. As they enjoy their hard-earned meal, Green notices Damian acting restless and tells him it is okay to let go and enjoy oneself every now and then. He also jokes that Damian should space out to get the eight Stella Stars to become an Imperial Scholar, which the boy takes seriously.

Eden Academy Stella Lake Anime

Green takes the boys to Stella Lake

After eating, Green takes the boys on a hike to see Stella Lake. On the way there, Green sings a song about going on a picnic and scares the boys as he tells them that the word "picnic" has been used as a code for defecting to Westalis through a third country. The boys wonder why people would go to the West, and Green points out how beautiful Ostania's night sky is. When Ewen brings up Damian's goal to get into politics, the boys talk about their dreams, which Green supports and gives them advice on. Upon reaching Stella Lake, Green proudly shows the boys the amazing sight and explains the meaning of its name. Damian is shocked there are no Stellas but denies that the trip was wasted. After the boys lie down and bond while taking in the view, Green informs them that they must head back and reminds them to write a field report. After returning to the dorm, Green sees Henry with the reports in hand. Henry thanks him and asks if he was able to "let the boys loose," which Green confirms.[1]

Red Circus Arc[]

When Eden's first-years take a bus trip to the Berlint Museum, Green helps escort the convoy of four buses, driving behind the fourth bus. Suddenly, the bus stops, and the driver informs Green that the second and third buses have driven off on their own, immediately alerting him. Green, accompanied by a man in a black suit, drives after the third bus, only for the back exit to open, revealing Billy Squire, who shoots at them with a shotgun. One of the front tires of Green's car gets hit, causing him to swerve and crash into a tree.[5] Afterward, Green and the man exit the car and examine its damage.[6]

Henry announces that there will be no interview about the bus hijacking

Green and Henry discuss the censorship of the hijacking with the children

After the hijacking by the Red Circus is resolved, Green, having gotten injured and wearing bandages over his head, attends the Stella awarding ceremony for Damian, Anya Forger, Becky Blackbell, and Bill Watkins. Later, when Henry tells the awardees that the authorities ordered the school not to speak about the incident, Green playfully suggests that the SSS does not want children stealing their accolades.[7]

Term Finals Arc[]

Green attends the first-years' end-of-term party. During the quiz competition, he is featured as the subject of the second question, which asks the students to guess his birthday.[8]

Term Break Arc[]

Mr. Green gives Ewen and Emile advice on jealousy

Green gives Ewen and Emile advice on dealing with jealousy

At the start of the second term, Green is approached by Ewen and Emile, who ask for advice on how to beat feelings of jealousy. Green says the quickest solution is to separate them from the source of their jealousy, but the boys say they cannot, revealing that their source is Damian. He then suggests telling Damian how they feel and ensuring they are right about his feelings, but they find that difficult. After they say they need to be Damian's favorites, Green tells them that jealousy is normal and does not need to be a bad thing. Green then remembers a strategy from a health teacher and shares it with the boys, telling them to separate their jealousy by imagining it as a cartoon character, Mr. Buzz, which will allow them to acknowledge and even embrace their feelings. The next day, Green speaks with Henry, who worries about the behavior of children nowadays. Green thinks it is cute and mentions how Ewen and Emile came to him for life advice the day before. Henry is shocked to hear this and becomes jealous since the boys overlooked him, their own housemaster.[9]

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Green appears to make his first appearance in Chapter 27, though he is properly introduced and named in Chapter 39.
  • In the original rough sketches of Mr. Green[10] and his first appearance, he has a square-shaped face, is bald, and has a bigger nose. From Chapter 39 onward, Mr. Green's face is slimmer, he has a small patch of hair on his head, a smaller nose, and now has three scars on his chin.
    • According to Tatsuya Endo, his editors requested for Mr. Green to be a handsome character. However, he did not want to give up on his design for the character, so they worked out a compromise for his current appearance.[10]
