Gerald Gorey (ジェラルド・ゴーリー, Jerarudo Gōrī^?) is the Chief Medical Director of Berlint General Hospital. He is jealous of Loid Forger's rising popularity in the hospital and connection to Fiona Frost, for whom he has a crush on.

Appearance

Gerald appears to be a middle-aged man of average height with light gray hair and brown eyes. He wears the hospital's standard lab coat over dark-colored clothes.

Personality

Gerald is an irritable man who greatly values status and reputation over anything else. As such, he has grown jealous of Loid and is bothered by his unnatural rise in popularity within the hospital. Initially wanting the public adoration that Loid has, Gerald attempted to make him a pariah in the hospital through underhanded schemes, even resorting to reporting him to SSS and accusing him as a spy. However, Gerald is not without his own misdeeds, as he is guilty of improperly accepting political donations and falsifying reimbursement requests. When backed into a corner, Gerald becomes a cowardly mess who tearfully begs for mercy. After being saved from arrest by Loid, Gerald acts slightly more politer, though he still appears to harbor jealousy toward his colleague.

History

Loid's past attempts to flatter Gerald

Through careful networking, Gerald Gorey achieved the position as Chief Medical Director of Berlint General Hospital. Using his position, he has improperly accepted political donations and falsified reimbursement requests. According to Loid's intel, he once used his friend's luxury car to go on joyrides, misrepresented himself as the hospital's CEO during dates, ate all the break room doughnuts and blamed it on a chubby subordinate, and even stole medical supplies from the hospital to sell them to other hospitals. When Loid began working at the hospital, he took many lengths to get on Gerald's good side with gifts and compliments. However, those efforts would prove fruitless as Gerald was jealous of Loid's rising popularity among the hospital's staff and patients, not to mention his closeness to Fiona Frost, whom Gerald has a crush on. As a result, Gerald refused to hand any VIP patients to Loid out of spite.

Gerald listens in on Loid's conversation with the staff

The day before Loid's vacation on Princess Lorelei, he speaks with his co-workers about the trip, with Fiona watching him from her desk while Gerald watches them both from behind a corner.

Friendship Schemes Arc

While Loid continues to receive adoration from the hospital's staff and patients, Gerald watches from afar while gnashing his teeth in envy. He later sees Fiona entering and leaving Loid's office and assumes he is also pursuing her. Reaching his limit, Gerald schemes to make Loid a pariah within the hospital.

Gerald starts by changing their staff meeting time on Loid's whiteboard to make him arrive half an hour late. Gerald expects their co-workers to admonish Loid, but to his surprise, they assume Loid has been overworking and give him their approval to rest. Gerald is shocked by their treatment, as they called him a lazy fat cat behind his back when he was one minute late for a meeting. For his next plot, Gerald gives Loid coffee filled with powerful laxatives before his afternoon exams. While Loid secretly takes an antidote, he still feels the effects of the laxatives and excuses himself to the bathroom during an examination. His endurance against his stomach pains inspires his young patient to fight on. Watching from a corner, Gerald is in disbelief as he once received a malpractice suit under the same circumstances. Later, when Loid leaves the bathroom, he accidentally leaves toilet paper hanging from his pants, which the staff finds endearing. Gerald watches their reactions in shock and believes they only act that way because of Loid's attractiveness.

Gerald reports Loid to the SSS

Gerald then forges a fake letter requesting a rendezvous with Fiona, hoping to slander Loid as a cheater and court Fiona at the same time. To his shock, Fiona crumples the note and seemingly meets with Loid to confirm its contents. Fed up with everyone's adoration of Loid, Gerald decides to use his last resort to remove Loid once and for all by reporting him to the SSS, claiming he is a spy. After making the call, Gerald meets with two incognito officers. The officers explain that their appearance is to stop their suspect from fleeing and they demand Gerald's silence about their identity to prevent damaging the hospital's reputation. Gerald agrees but is slightly disappointed at being unable to humiliate Loid by having him arrested in front of the staff, having only considered himself. Unbeknownst to Gerald the two officers are actually Fiona and Franky in disguise, as they intercepted Gerald's call and are colluding with Loid for his counterattack on Gerald.

Gerald leads the officers to Loid, whom he claims has been rummaging through the records room at night and is selling the hospital's information to the West. He then takes them to Loid's desk, where he planted a file filled with fake evidence for them to find. The officers look through the file and promptly arrest Loid, much to Gerald's joy as he watches nearby. However, when Loid is questioned about the file, Fiona removes Gerald from his hiding spot and reveals that he was the one who accused him. After Gerald desperately tries to explain himself saying that he assumed Loid's rising popularity was because of a spy technique, which Franky confirms in his thoughts. Loid analyzes the files and points out that they were typed on a uniquely old typewriter, which everyone pinpoints back to Gerald, the only person in the hospital who owns one.

Gerald thanks Loid for saving him

The situation quickly turns on Gerald, who tries to deny that he framed Loid, but Franky holds him at gunpoint and forces him to name himself. Fiona says Gerald is on the hospital's surveillance list and, using her and Loid's intel, they reveal all of his misdeeds, much to Gerald's shock. Fiona then cuffs Gerald, who calls out for her to save him, much to her confusion. Before Gerald gets taken away, Loid makes an impassioned speech about Gerald with false bravado, hailing him as "the hospital's greatest treasure" and asking to be arrested in his place. Gerald is touched by this act, while Franky pretends to be moved and lets them go. Gerald tearfully thanks Loid for saving him, and Loid offers to help lighten his load with things such as the VIP exams, which he agrees to.

Red Circus Arc

When Anya and her fellow first graders at Eden Academy are on their way to the museum for their field trip, Anya thinks about copying Loid's trick on Gerald to achieve a more positive relationship with Damian, having learned about it after reading his mind. However, Anya's plan utterly fails when she attempts it.

Mole Hunt Arc

Gerald gives Fiona the medical files for Loid's VIP patients

After completing the mission to capture Ostanian agent Winston Wheeler in Shellbury, Fiona is admitted to Berlint General Hospital to recover from the injuries she sustained from her fight with Wheeler under the pretense that she clumsily fell down four floors at the hospital stairs. Unaware of the true nature of her injuries, Gerald secures a private room for Fiona while hoping to spend more time with her. Contrary to his expectations, Fiona completely brushes him off. Before being escorted out of the room by a nurse (who is actually Fiona's handler, Sylvia Sherwood in disguise), Gerald gives Fiona the medical files for the VIP patients being assigned to Loid.

Term Break Arc

Sometime after Berlint's annual winter festival, Gerald greets Loid at the psychiatry department and asks if he has grown accustomed to treating VIP patients. After Loid replies that he has, Gerald informs him of a surprise drop-in patient: Melinda Desmond, Ostania's former First Lady. Gerald fills Loid in on the situation, mentioning her aversion to getting kicked and assuming she is suffering from an intense persecution complex, so he advises Loid to show extreme care and discretion with her. Gerald asks if Loid can handle Melinda and assures him that he will not be under the current government's watchlist for doing so, though he plans to blame it all on him if it goes wrong.

Loid Forger

Gerald initially despised Loid out of jealousy for his popularity with the hospital's staff and patients, believing that it was stolen from him. Despite Loid's attempts to flatter Gerald, he would remain jealous of him, especially due to his apparent closeness with Fiona, whom he has a crush on. Gerald eventually gets fed up with Loid and attempts to make him a pariah in the hospital using all the tricks he knows, though they all backfire on him immensely. After Loid stages Gerald's arrest and consequently saves him from it, Gerald is grateful to Loid for saving his life, though he still harbors some animosity toward him for the same reasons.

When Fiona calls in sick, Gerald decides to pay her a get-well visit and invites Loid along so he can talk with her. On the way there, Gerald notices Loid tapping his feet and assumes they are both excited to see Fiona's home, unaware that Loid was sending secret signals to notify Fiona of their arrival. After checking on Fiona, Loid stops Gerald from making more advances toward her and leaves so she can rest, later telling him that leaving when they did is the sign of a truly caring boss.

While he has suspected Loid to be using spy persuasion techniques to gain his popularity and falsely accused him of being a spy, Gerald is unaware of Loid's true identity as a spy.

Fiona Frost

Gerald has a huge crush on Fiona, likely attracted by her beauty. Despite her many rejections and Gerald being aware of her fondness for Loid, he continues his attempts to court her and uses many methods to do so, from writing fake love letters from Loid to her to even giving her a private hospital room when she was injured so he could spend more time with her. When Fiona calls in sick, Gerald decides to pay her a get-well visit, bringing Loid along so he can talk with her. Upon meeting with Fiona, Gerald attempts to invite himself in, only to be harshly rejected. Gerald persists and tries to make some small talk, but Loid hurries their departure to let Fiona rest.

Gerald is unaware of Fiona's true identity as a spy.
