I already told you once—you gotta keep your emotions out of this. If you value your life, never trust anyone. That's just how people like you and me gotta live.
— Franky to Loid Forger[1]

Franky Franklin (フランキー・フランクリン, Furankī Furankurin?) is one of the recurring characters of the SPY x FAMILY series. While he appears to be a tobacco store clerk, he is secretly an informant who is an associate of Loid Forger and provides him with intel, having got him information regarding Eden Academy's exam and Anya's past records.

Appearance[]

Franky is a man with a square face, round eyes, and an upturned nose. He has big, curly dark brown hair and a short goatee.

He usually wears a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, a red tie, black suspenders, red and white striped socks, and brown shoes. He sports glasses with a thick red frame and an earring on his left earlobe.

Personality[]

Franky learns the truth about Kacey

Franky is heartbroken when he finds out his love interest has a boyfriend

Franky is a kind person willing to help Loid out whenever he is in a pinch, even though the danger is high. He frequently warns Loid not to get too close to other people in their line of work. Despite this advice, Franky frequently falls in love with other women, but his love life typically fails due to a lack of mutual interest or because they are already with someone else. In contrast, Franky is more successful with friends, as he knows many people and is popular enough to be greeted by many people at a club.

Franky is a rather money-driven person, as he is willing to perform favors for Loid if the spy promises to give him material goods, even if he was previously reluctant to do so or the situation was extremely dangerous.

Franky tells Loid about his eliminated contact

One of Franky's secret talks with Loid

Having participated in the second East-West war, Franky came to understand that the war was a result of a diplomatic failure and deemed it stupid and pointless for regular people to kill each other on their respective nation's orders, which led him to defect from the Ostanian army. While he lives in Ostania, Franky dislikes the government's oppressive nature and is willing to collaborate with Westalian agents like Loid and Fiona by secretly passing them intel, which Franky considers his way of fighting back.

Abilities and Skills[]

As an informant, Franky's primary skills are information gathering and making contacts.

Intelligence Gathering: Franky is an extraordinarily impressive informant, being able to access a vast amount of highly secure information without getting caught or noticed by the SSS, from accessing and copying a large pile of personal documents regarding info on unmarried women in the city to getting the answers to an exam from Eden Academy. He also has access to a large network of contacts and fellow informants, allowing him to quickly gather information and borrow a large variety of skills as needed, as well as go around the city unnoticed.

Inventing: Being one of his passions, Franky can build a variety of gadgets, though they are often niche or extremely limited in use.[3] While he has made many inventions to show off to Loid, very few are practical enough to be used by him.

Known Inventions[]

C20 Feline-Form Listening Device: A listening device designed in the shape of a regular-sized house cat, intended for searching for lost cats. It is loaded with many sensors and will react if a target approaches.
Cat Nearness Inducement Prototype (CAT-N.I.P.) Decoy System: A machine that releases the scent of catnip, intended to lure lost cats in. The fact that it also lures in other cats is admittedly a design defect.
Hyper Long Hand: A device that quickly shoots out a grapple to capture a target. However, it can only shoot out in a straight line, so it is not ideal against targets that can quickly sidestep.
Camera-Shaped Net Launcher: A net launcher built to appear as a normal camera. It is ideally used for surprise captures, as it launches a net out of the camera's viewfinder. However, its range is only a mere two meters, so it is best used at very close range.
Exoskeleton Power Suit: Franky's ultimate weapon, which he developed for a decade. It granted incredible superhuman strength, though only after a 15-minute warm-up cycle. Unfortunately for Franky, Yor destroyed the suit before he got the chance to use it during their attempts to catch the cat Kopi.
  • Other inventions include:
    • A machine to talk to women on dates based on the flowchart Loid made for him.[4]
    • A machine to make him taller. (Failed)[2]
    • X-ray glasses. (Failed)[2]
    • A pistol disguised as a toothbrush.[3]

Trivia[]

  • As revealed in Franky's Secret Files in Volume 1, Franky was originally intended to be the uncle of the Forger family.
  • During the development pitch, some of Franky's professions were an underworld doctor, psychiatrist, engineer, philosopher, and the inventor of spy gear. He is also described as an informant with a high IQ.[5]
  • Franky's character was modeled after the character of Mozzie, who was the main character's sidekick in the American TV drama White Collar.[6]
  • Franky's favorite things are inventing, browsing tools at the hardware store, rummaging through junk parts, and collecting.[2]
  • Franky's disliked things are handsome guys, rich people, and the Ostanian government.[2]
  • Franky sometimes does charity work to support victims of the war and certain causes like landmine removal.[2]
  • Franky's hair is naturally curly, and he can even hide small listening devices in it.[2]
  • Franky's chair, featured on the cover of the eighth volume, is a Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Charles and Ray Eames.
  • When attempting to catch Kopi, one of the inventions Franky used is a net launcher disguised as a camera, which is labelled "Spyder" and fires a net reminiscing a spider's web. This could be a reference to the popular comic book superhero, Spider-Man, and his career in photography as his alter ego, Peter Parker.

Quotes[]

  • (To Fiona Frost): "Oh, I'm not on anyone's side. I'm just not a fan of the way the East does things. This country's too rigid. Too oppressive. So I like to shake things up with a little trouble sometimes. Guess I'm going through a rebellious phase."[7]
  • (To Loid Forger): "I'm just saying, isn't it stupid? This whole war between East and West—it's all the result of a diplomatic fiasco. So why is it that all of us worthless peons gotta be the ones to clean up their mess? They tell us to hate each other. So we fight. And then we die. It's the most pointless thing in the world."[8]
