Summary[]
Loid watches his hometown in ruins
Following the explosion, Loid reawakens to find the collapsed croquette shop and the destroyed town square before him. Frozen in shock and disbelief, his thoughts are interrupted by another explosion and a civilian telling him to evacuate, as the Ostanian army is coming. As Loid tries to process their words, his mother arrives and takes him away to her uncle in Kielberg. Loid objects, saying he still has school and that the town fair is tomorrow, prompting his mother to say there is no longer time for that. Before leaving, Loid takes one last look at what is left of Luwen as he evacuates with his mother.
Loid and his maternal family
At Kielberg, Loid and his mother grieve over his father's absence. As the news reports on the developing war, Loid tells himself that grown-ups are liars, as they said there would not be a war, including his father. He also admits to being a liar himself and vows to tell his father the truth when he returns. Loid quickly gets frightened by the sound of an explosion and runs to his mother in tears. While she comforts him, Loid wishes to return to Luwen and be with his friends and family. Sometime later, Loid is away from home as an air raid strikes Kielberg. Despite being taken to the shelter, he runs back outside to find his mother, only to find her and their home gone. Now all alone, Loid helplessly cries out in a cruel world.
From that point onward, Loid spent the next few years surviving on his own amidst the chaos. Having lost everything he ever cared about and left with the things he despised, Loid decided to join the army. Taking the identity of "Roland Spoofy" and lying about his age, Loid fought in the East-West conflict, using his skills as a tactician to win battles. As the war continues, he wonders how many more corpses he must pile up before finally seeing the light of dawn on the horizon.
Franky talks to Loid at the front
One night, while stationed in the mountains, Loid encounters Franky, whom he recognizes as an Ostanian soldier. Franky explains that he is a deserter and begs to be spared, not wanting to die without ever being with a woman. Amused by his pleas, Loid spares him, and the two have a brief conversation. Using a university research experiment as an example, Franky explains that this war is pointless, caused by a diplomatic fiasco, and forcing regular people to fight each other. Loid pins the start of the war on Ostania and grows frustrated when Franky challenges this. Despite the Ostanian saying they share the same experiences, Loid almost kills him in revenge. However, they are interrupted by the soldiers pursuing Franky, forcing the two men to run off in their separate ways. As Loid makes his escape, he begins questioning himself.
Loid and his friends reunite
After being sent off the frontlines to recover, Loid reunites with his childhood friends, who miraculously survived the bombings. While they are happy to see him alive, Loid starts to tear up, having assumed them dead and blaming himself for it. With the friends now together again, Loid excitedly invites them out to a restaurant, only to learn that they are to be deployed tonight for a military campaign, but they promise to hang out once they return. However, Loid would find out that the operation they were assigned to was planned recklessly, and all that came back from his friends were their dog tags. With the loss of his friends, Loid reflects on his path up until this point. Loid realizes that he truly knew nothing about the war he was fighting. Without knowing the reason why and coming to his own conclusions, Loid picked up a gun and obeyed his country's orders to fight those he hated. He concludes that "Ignorance isn't bliss. Ignorance is weakness. Ignorance is a sin."
Loid thinks about his purpose to enlist as a spy
Some time later, Loid is approached by a man who knows his real name and that he enlisted with a fake name and age, as Loid's reunion with his friends exposed him. The man reveals himself as military intelligence and states that he has come to recruit Loid, stating that his skills are better suited for information, the strongest and essential weapon of all. The recruiter offers him a choice: join their agency or face a court-martial. After Loid agrees, the recruiter tells him to throw away his name and rank to become a shadow for the sake of his country. Loid tells the man that he does not care, since no one knows his real name, nor does he care about his country or winning the war. When the man questions Loid's reason, a youthful group of children passes by, and the young man claims there is none. Upon joining military intelligence, Loid meets his new commanding officer, Sylvia Sherwood, whose orders are to turn him into a first-rate intelligence operative through the harshest means necessary.
The Forgers prepare to have dinner
Reliving his training days, Twilight jolts up in a cold sweat. While Anya and Yor are relieved he is okay, Twilight remembers he is in "Loid's house" and tries to collect himself, thinking about what he just dreamt of. Seeing Loid's state, Anya pats her father's head, assuring him that there is nothing to be afraid of, much to his bashfulness. When Loid wonders why he was asleep on the sofa, Anya reminds him how he fainted after she got a Tonitrus Bolt. Loid quickly worries about how this damages Operation Strix but instead focuses on Anya's bond with Damian, telling her that friends are important and to cherish them. The surprised silence at Loid's words is interrupted by the growl of Bond's stomach, so the Forgers prepare a dinner with onions together. Afterward, they sit in the living room to enjoy their meal.
