AVOID GETTING TONITRUS BOLTS[]

Donna stuns a smoker

Madam Schlag stuns a smoker

The cloudy skies over Eden Academy rumble as Madam Schlag walks through the school. Upon noticing a student smoking behind a wall, she gestures to Rahden to hand her a box. With a loud clap of thunder, the student suddenly faints to the ground with a Tonitrus Bolt on his forehead as the woman and the keeper of her box walk away.

In Cecile Hall's classroom, Henry Henderson berates the students for the recent increase in tardiness and late homework assignments, eyeing Anya in particular. As the students leave the classroom, she and Becky chat about doing their homework but are interrupted by Damian, who mocks Anya's tardiness and bets she will be the first to be expelled for getting eight bolts. Becky defends Anya and begins to bicker with Emile and Ewen, the latter two declaring that the three of them will run through the school in their underpants if Damian gets a Tonitrus Bolt. Before Damian can protest, Bill Watkins runs toward Cecile Hall's students, warning them to run away before it is too late.

Outside, Madam Schlag strikes two older students with Tonitruses for their unkempt uniforms, uncouth speech, and conspiring to commit acts of violence against other students. After she disparages the students of Murdoch Swan's Cline Hall, and Henry appears, greeting Mistress Schlag on her return, but wonders if she is overdoing things. Schlag smirks at Henry as she says he has gotten soft, then suggests paying his first-years a visit next before leaving. Meanwhile, in the hallway, Bill tells about Mistress Donna Schlag's return after her hospitalization and her fearsome reputation for handing out Tonitrus Bolts for any infraction, rumored to have single-handedly expelled over a hundred students, earning her the alias "Old Lady Tonitrus."

Bill warns Cecile Hall to run away as his classroom has already fallen victim to her before fainting. Becky is horrified and calls for her classmates to run to safety, but before anyone can escape, Donna is already in front of the students and introduces herself, instructing them to line up and prepare for a bag inspection. In the classroom, Donna checks the students' bags, giving out Tonitrus Bolts for snacks and playing cards she finds in them. To Anya's horror, she realizes Donna is gleefully having fun punishing the students. Damian is relaxed since he and his friends did not bring anything prohibited.

Donna cries about Mr. Pee Pants

The students finds out about "Mr. Pee Pants"

The situation changes after Donna punishes a student with a Tonitrus for not bringing a handkerchief. When another student tries to protest, Donna calls for silence and then recounts the tale of an honor student who wiped his hands on his pants as he forgot to bring his handkerchief, earning him the nickname "Mr. Pee Pants" by his peers. The humiliation caused the boy to become a troublemaker and get expelled, later joining an antigovernment group and getting caught by the Secret Police.

Anya imagines Donovan's gratitude

Anya imagines Donovan's gratitude for saving Damian from a Tonitrus

The students become scared of the story and quickly check for their handkerchiefs, and Damian is dismayed to find that he did not bring his. He recalls the promise his friends made earlier to run around the school in their underpants and thinks about asking Ewen for his handkerchief, but Damian is unable to sacrifice his friend. Anya initially takes some joy in Damian's distress, but his thoughts that even a single Tonitrus Bolt would prevent him from facing his father again make her fear for Plan B. Changing his mind, Damian tries to ask Ewen, but he is too late as his friend gets called for his inspection. Believing that she has a spare handkerchief, Anya gives Damian her own and imagines how he and Donovan will thank her for her heroism.

Anya receives her second Tonitrus

Anya receives her second Tonitrus

Donna checks the "A" monogrammed on Damian's borrowed handkerchief, and he excuses it by claiming it is the "A" in his name, which Donna doubtfully accepts. Next, Anya confidently goes forward but quickly realizes she did not bring a second handkerchief, and Donna gives her a Tonitrus. Seeing Anya cry, Damian feels conflicted and tries to admit the truth, but Anya overhears through her telepathy that Donna intends to give them two bolts each if she finds out they are tricking her and quickly stops him.

After the bag inspection, Damian is embarrassed to have been saved by Anya and swears to repay her. Anya does not fully understand Damian's promise but is happy that she has gotten closer to him despite her new Tonitrus. When she returns home, Anya tells Loid about her and Damian getting closer, which he is happy to hear. However, upon noticing the Tonitrus on Anya's chest, Loid is shocked and faints, much to Yor and Anya's dismay.

Young Loid playing with his friends

Young Loid playing soldier with his friends

In Luwen, Eastern Westalis, four boys pretend to be soldiers fighting a war between Westalis and Ostania. One of the boys is "Advisor," who will one day become Twilight and Loid Forger. The young Loid quickly turns a disadvantageous situation to his team's favor by using his ingenuity and tricks, ultimately winning the game. His friends, "Major," "General," and "Corporal" are always amazed by how into his roles Loid can get. Frustrated with losing all the time, General tells Loid that he will not get a rank until he gets some proper military gear, to which Loid says that his father is strict about those things. "Corporal" tries to reason with General, reminding him that Loid found their secret hideout in an old army storage depot. After playing card games and planning a sleepover, the children march back to the town and head to their homes.

Young Loid is slapped by his father

Loid is slapped by his father

Loid returns home and sees his parents inside. His father chastises him for playing soldier and tells him to focus on his studies and future. Loid says he plans on joining the army with his friends, but his father refuses the idea, calling him a coward. Loid insists and proclaims to kill all the monsters from the East, prompting his father to slap and berate him. He asks the boy if he knows about these "Ostanian monsters," then tells him there will be no war and that he should be hoping for peace instead of conflict. An upset Loid breaks his toy gun in his hand and runs to his room while his mother argues with her husband over his treatment of their son, which he justifies it for Loid's own good. In his room, Loid calls his father a hypocrite for preaching about peace despite fighting with his mother all the time.

The next day, Loid and his friends hang out at the town square. While buying croquettes, the adults ask the boys to help prepare for the upcoming town fair. While helping out, Loid asks if there really will be a war. The adults assure him that the new pact the East and West put together has ended such conflicts. General then teases Loid, saying whether there is war or peace, Loid will not be let in the army for not having a proper soldier uniform. When Loid argues against them, he gets reminded of the toy gun he just broke and is embarrassed. Returning home, Loid sees his father who is preparing to leave for a work trip. Loid tells him about a reference book he needs for school and asks for pocket money. His father is happy to hear his, which shakes Loid. After Loid receives the money, his father promises to take him to the town fair when he returns. Feeling guilty about his lie, Loid almost tells his father before he leaves but stops himself.

After buying the soldier set, Loid goes to the secret hideout and shows it off to his friends. As the boys get ready to play, Loid becomes overcome with guilt and leaves the hideout to instead help set up the fair. At the croquette shop, Loid talks with its owner about war and the people of Ostania. He begins feeling conflicted, realizing how different things are from what he thought they would be. Loid asks the croquette lady if he can make 10 dalc in a day if he helps out at her shop, hoping to pay back his father. He then thinks about apologizing to his father and asking his friends if they can play a different game. Suddenly, a bomb is launched into the town and destroys the secret hideout. Meanwhile, the radio broadcasts a special alert, with reports that the Ostanian Army has crossed the border and is launching its attack on the eastern provinces of Westalis. Loid sees the bomb's smoke on the horizon, which is followed by another bomb being dropped on the town square. He is caught in the explosion, and a rock chunk hits his head, knocking the confused boy unconscious.
