PLAN TO CROSS THE BORDER (MISSION: 30 越境作戰, MISSION: 30 Ekkyō Sakusen?) is the thirtieth episode of the SPY x FAMILY TV anime series and the fifth episode of the second season.

Synopsis[]

On a mission as Thorn Princess and using her job as city hall as a cover, Yor is tasked with protecting the only survivors of the Gretcher family, Olka and her son, and helping them escape to a different country by traveling on a cruise ship.[1]

Summary[]

Yor and her colleague arrive at a garden maintained by the Shopkeeper. While she takes a moment to smell the flowers, the Shopkeeper decides to test her instincts. After successfully dodging the attack, he apologizes for his sudden attack but is satisfied with her reflexes, and briefs her on her latest assignment, to protect the surviving members of the Gretcher family, Olka Gretcher and her son, aboard the cruise ship Princess Lorelei.

The Shopkeeper explains to Yor that she will be defending the two from a group of assassins as they cross the border. Yor hesitates to take on the job as she worries about her cover at work and home. However, Garden has already prepared a cover story that she is there as part of her work. With her mind at rest, the Thorn Princess gladly accepts the assignment. On her way home, Yor thinks about how to motivate herself and runs into Yuri on the subway. As they chat, Yor asks Yuri if he is taking care of himself, to which he reassures her that he is not a child anymore and can also be relied on. After the siblings part ways, Yor thinks about how Yuri is all grown-up now and wonders to herself why she is keeping her assassin job.

Meanwhile, the mall is hosting the biannual mega raffle, with the grand prize being a pair of tickets for a voyage on a cruise ship. Anya sees this and asks Loid for the raffle ticket they have earned to try her luck. As Anya queues for the raffle, she discovers through her telepathy that the person in charge of the event has rigged it after sticking the winning ticket to the top of the raffle box. With this information in mind, Anya pulls out the winning ticket.

At home, Anya happily shows Yor the tickets she won. Loid suggests Yor go with Anya because he has work, but after glancing at the tickets, Yor reveals she is already going on the same boat as part of her work trip. Worried about missing out on the trip, Anya starts screaming about wanting to go. Reluctant, Loid agrees to ask if he can get time off his work. To his surprise, Sylvia accepts his request and makes arrangements so he can get time off from the Berlint General Hospital as well.

The big day arrives, and as the Forgers make their way to the port, Anya is very excited, while Yor feels that she would enjoy this trip if she did not accept her assignment. However, she ponders making this the Thorn Princess's final job. At the port, before meeting her colleagues, Yor says farewell to her family, promising to contact them when she can. As all the passengers board the ship, so too do suspicious figures.

Aboard Princess Lorelei, Anya excitedly observes the various facilities on the ship, including a pool, a circus, and the game room. Anya is eager to explore the ship on an adventure but is disappointed upon seeing that their third-class suite is small and cramped, assuming that it's one of the ship's jail cells. However, she quickly recovers and is excited as she's never slept on a bunk bed before. Loid comments that Yor's group is likely in first-class since she is with the dignitaries.

In the first-class suite, Yor's colleague introduces himself as Matthew McMahon to a man and a woman with a child, who introduce themselves as Furseal Grey and his wife, Shaty. Yor notes that Shaty must be Olka and that her appearance is different from the photo, probably to travel incognito. Furseal observes that Yor must be Olka's assigned bodyguard and wonders if she can protect Olka despite her slim appearance. The Greys are offered a tour of the ship, though Olka refuses so she can take of her baby. As the group leaves, Furseal expresses concern for leaving just the two of them alone, but Matthew assures him that Yor is strong.

Now alone with Olka, Yor inspects the suite for possible entry and escape routes. Yor talks with Olka, who says Furseal is a member of her crew playing a part, and after talking about herself, she expresses her desire to live a quiet life with her son. Olka then requests that she and her son go outside for a short moment. Yor is hesitant, but Olka says their enemy does not know what she looks like and knows that Yor will protect her, so she accepts. As they prepare to leave, Yor nervously looks outside the door. Olka questions her actions, and Yor says her family is also aboard the ship.

In the ship's atrium, Anya tells Loid they must explore the ship before it sinks, embarrassing her father. Loid observes his surroundings, seeing the ship is a potential target for terrorism and should stay vigilant. When Anya notes that he is not having fun, Loid remembers Sylvia telling him to treat the trip like any other mission. He decides to refocus his efforts on attaining optimal recreation and tells Anya they should watch a show.

Snoops locates Olka's room

Yor explains to Olka that her family's presence on the ship is a coincidence and that they are unaware of her real job. Olka asks if they are for her cover identity, and Yor confirms it with a tender look on her face. Olka's son starts to cry, reminding Yor of their plan to go outside. Olka stops Yor to lend some clothes for a disguise. When they go outside for fresh air, Olka is visibly wistful about leaving her old life behind. As they head back inside, Yor promises to give it her all and finish the job for Olka and her son. Olka is moved and reveals that her son's name is Gram, named after her father, and offers to let Yor hold him. Unbeknownst to them, their conversation was captured by a listening bug, which an informant uses to locate Olka's cabin room.
