Mission 91 (
Summary[]
While dropping off Anya at her school bus stop, Yor and Anya run into the Authens. After greeting the pair and chatting with Anya, Sigmund comments that Yor is going to work early, and Yor responds that she will be helping hold an event at the city square, which Barbara recognizes as the charity bazaar for disabled veterans. Yor invites the Authens to the event, and while Sigmund expresses support, he begins muttering about bringing a lunch, which Anya tells Yor.
At the charity bazaar, the city hall workers are hard at work carrying boxes to help with the event. While Millie complains about having to carry so many heavy things, Camilla and Dominic flirt, and Yor is her cheery self as she carries many loads. Matthew McMahon tells the workers to keep their griping to a minimum as they are being watched by not only the Wounded Veteran Alliance but also the Lady Patriots Society, and the mention of them causes grumbles among the office clerk girls. Yor recognizes the group as Melinda Desmond's club and explains to her co-workers that she knows Melinda, though they do not believe her. Yor wonders if Melinda will make an appearance at the event, but Dominic tells her that it is unheard of due to Melinda having many enemies.
As the city hall workers head back to work, Millie looks around at the disabled veterans and says that she cannot do this and decides to return to the office. Yor is confused as Millie gets consoled, but before Sharon can explain Millie's situation, they are interrupted by women from the Lady Patriots Society, who tell them to get back to work. Wanting to avoid conflict with the ladies, Camilla and Sharon act more accommodating and respectful to the ladies while enduring their insults of being ignorant to the soldiers. However, Millie talks back to the women and tells them that even though those soldiers survived and returned home, her dad was not one of them.
The women ignore Millie's feelings and verbally attack her, saying that everyone here is suffering, calling Millie's feelings selfish, and looking down on her. Millie is overwhelmed and walks away, and Yor stands between her and the leading woman who tries to get closer to her. Yor asks the women why they said those things about Millie, and they tell her that they are the same after what they went through. Yor shares that she also lost her parents during the war and is now working as hard as she can, which she demonstrates by carrying ten stacked boxes. The astounded women are shocked when Yor then asks them to do the same, saying they are not like her, to which she asks why they insist that Millie is the same as them.
Sharon argues that by the women's logic, everyone is the same emotionally, so there is no difference between those suffering and those who are not. The leading woman yells that their generation did not have to suffer through the war like the younger generation, but Yor, who thinks about her and Yuri, says that the younger generation has also suffered in their own ways as well, which touches Millie. The city hall workers then decide to wrap up their discussion and head back to work. The humiliated leading woman raises her hand toward Yor but is stopped by a disguised Melinda.
Melinda has a cheerful reunion with Yor, to everyone's surprise as they realize Yor was telling the truth about knowing Melinda. Millie feels betrayed by this friendship and shouts that Donovan Desmond was the one who started the war and cannot believe that Yor could be friends with the wife of a "monster." The ladies are outraged by her rudeness, and Camilla tries to hold her back, but Millie continues to glare at a surprised Melinda. Matthew attracts Millie's attention, commenting that Donovan was elected to be Prime Minister after the war had already started. He also instructs Millie to learn her history to avoid applying unwarranted blame due to her own ignorance, embarrassing the young woman.
While the women of the Lady Patriots Society demand an apology from Millie, Melinda believes that, as a Desmond, she should be apologizing to her. Melinda tells Millie that she empathizes with how she feels due to having a family of her own, saying that she would also resent someone if she lost any of them. Melinda is called to meet with the Wounded Veterans Association, but before she goes, she takes the materials from Millie and thanks her for her help.
The ladies are displeased with Melinda's cute attitude, but she stops the outrage, saying that policing each other's behavior is not supporting each other, as it would be a return to wartime repression. Millie apologizes to Melinda for what she said, which makes Melinda happy as she says she would have felt bad if Millie hated Yor because of her. After that, Melinda leaves, and Millie decides to help out at the event a little longer, saying that she would rather be with her co-workers than by herself. Camilla and Sharon are worried about their friend, and Camilla comments that Millie hates being alone, which Millie agrees with. Millie shares that she was very young when her dad died and does not remember him very well, and his absence made her feel lonely. Millie also blames her loneliness for things not going great for her and for the way she blows up sometimes, but she is happy that she has this job with everyone.
Millie thanks Yor for her help and says that she no longer sees her as a "weird, clueless robot" but a "kindly gorilla." Sharon is displeased by her strange compliments, but a clueless Yor does not take offense by these words. Camilla moves on to talk about how Yor is actually friends with Melinda and assumes she gets treated to fancy dinners, which Yor corrects that she does not. Millie then comments that Yor does not even try to act posh around Melinda. To their surprise, Yor does not know what "posh" means, and Sharon tells her that they will teach her if she buys drinks for them tonight, which Yor agrees to. Observing the girls, Dominic wonders aloud when did they get so friendly. Later that night, Yor returns home and greets the Forgers with a fancy greeting she learned from her co-workers, which takes Loid aback.
