Summary[]

Loid consults Melinda

Loid asks Melinda about her symptoms

At Berlint General Hospital, following his decision to take in Melinda Desmond as his patient, Loid happily greets her, only to be confused when she raises her arms in defense in front of him. Inside the consultation room, Melinda explains to Loid that she came at Yor's urging, which makes him think about how the women's relationship has been deepening to this extent. Loid begins by looking at Melinda's listed symptoms: headaches, insomnia, and diminished appetite. He asks her when they began and to think of any possible triggers that started it. Seeing Melinda's hesitation, Loid tells her to feel free to share anything, promising under his oath of confidentiality that he will not share the contents of their session or the fact that she is being treated, and encourages her to report him if their sessions ever cause her harm.

Seeing Loid's strength in how he deals with his patients, Melinda says that he and Yor strike her as lively people, which prompts Loid to ask if she does not see herself that way. Melinda hesitates once more, and Loid encourages her to open up to him about her feelings so he can help her, though he secretly hopes Melinda will share any intel that could be useful to Operation Strix. After some thinking, she excuses her attendant, Nola, from the room. Melinda tells Loid that she was once a patient at the hospital during the second war, though the times made the experience difficult, and even her doctor at the time treated her with great agitation. However, meeting Yor has helped convince Melinda that people nowadays may not remember her as "the former First Lady" and that she needs to change herself.

Melinda tells Loid that Donovan is an alien

"In truth, my husband... is an alien."

Melinda confesses that she is coming to this session to seek help as a mother and wife, which makes Loid ask if she is experiencing some sort of distress involving her family. After a pause, Melinda suddenly asks Loid if he believes in UFOs. Although startled by the question, Loid decides to hear her out as her doctor. After recalling rumors that Melinda is obsessed with the dark arts, he decides to look into it by feigning interest in the topic. Loid tells her that while he has never seen a UFO, he considers the possibility of their existence and happily talks about the magazines and investigative reports regarding them that he has read. He stops himself after seeing Melinda not sharing the same enthusiasm and returns to their session. Loid asks if there is a connection between UFOs and her family, suspecting possibilities like Donovan somehow being connected to space exploration. To Loid's bafflement, however, Melinda says it is about her husband, whom she says is an alien.
