The Campbelldon Tennis Arc is the eighth story arc in SPY x FAMILY.

Along with his agent co-worker, Nightfall, Twilight must enter an underground tennis tournament in an attempt to recover the Zacharis Dossier, rumored to "reignite the flames of war," before the government of Ostania does. Meanwhile, Yor struggles with her insecurities and worries about Loid's "lover."

The Hospital Visit[]

At Eden Academy, Anya is tasked with investigating a job for her class report. Anya initially chooses Yor, who imagines taking her on an assassination. After the gruesome scenario, the two conclude that Anya should make her report on Loid's psychiatrist job instead. When Loid arrives home, he agrees to help Anya and, two days later, takes her to his workplace at Berlint General Hospital. While showing Anya around the hospital, Loid answers her interview questions, but she instead listens to and records his thoughts relating to his spy work. After encountering Loid's co-workers, who dote on Anya and give her candy, Loid takes Anya to one of the empty consultation rooms. When she begins fiddling with the room's bookshelf in boredom, Loid quickly stops her, revealing an emergency escape route on that bookshelf in his thoughts.

Loid leaves to meet with fellow WISE agent Fiona Frost after receiving a signal, but not before providing Anya a sand table to play with while she waits for him to return. After he leaves, Anya quickly goes to the bookshelf to access the escape route. Anya excitedly explores the passage and peeps on several doctors having a meeting. When she tries to leave, she realizes her leg got stuck under a pipe and struggles to free herself. Her struggling sounds are mistaken for a ghost, which terrifies the committee. Anya manages to escape and return to the room just before Loid does and quickly makes something on the sand table.

Henry shocked — Henry hears Anya's presentation on Loid's job

When Loid returns, he analyzes her work on the sand table to observe her subconscious mind and is shocked to see it in utter chaos. Interpreting it as Anya subconsciously being stressed since her adoption, Loid decides she needs immediate care. He offers to help work on her report and checks what she has written in her notebook, which contains notes on his spy work. However, Anya's writing is unreadable to Loid, and she decides to write the report on her own. When the two return home, Yor tells Anya about Loid's concussive therapy, which he desperately tries to explain. On the day of the report, Anya presents Loid's job but unintentionally paints him and his work in a bad light, which shocks Henry Henderson. Elsewhere, Loid gets an ominous chill, and he is later summoned to the school, where he manages to talk his way out with his equivocation skills.^[2]

DECIPHER THE PERPLEXING CODE[]

While watching an episode of Spy Wars, Anya gets inspired to make a top-secret code for a rendezvous and gets Yor to help write down letters with the code. Anya hands out the codes to everyone she knows at home and school, including Bond, Franky, Becky, and Damian, and refuses to reveal its contents. Later that night, Anya sets her alarm clock to one hour before the rendezvous and dreams about someone showing up after cracking the code. Meanwhile, Franky returns to his home and remembers the code Anya gave him. Upon noticing the nice handwriting and smell of the paper, Franky assumes it is a love letter from a beautiful woman. Franky stays up all night to crack the code and arrives early at the rendezvous dressed in a suit and tie while carrying a bouquet of roses. Meanwhile, at the Forger home, Anya sleeps through her ringing alarm clock, which Bond shuts off.^[3]

Nightfall[]

At WISE Safe House G, Sylvia briefs Fiona, aka Nightfall, on Twilight's upcoming mission. As it will be a joint mission between the agents, Sylvia instructs her to inform Loid and work out a plan together but warns her to ensure it does not get in the way of Operation Strix. Fiona apologizes for being unavailable to fill in for the role of the wife and proposes taking over, but Sylvia rejects her in favor of keeping the family as-is. Fiona mutters that there would be no choice if the wife were to abandon the role before leaving. Fiona waits for Yor to be alone at the Forgers' home and approaches her to return Anya's magnifying glass, which was left behind at the hospital. Yor thanks Fiona for returning it and invites her in. Fiona, intending to remove Yor from Operation Strix and usurp the wife role, tries to look for an opening, but Yor has her guard up out of nervousness. Fiona decides to make Yor leave of her own will and claims that Loid frequently complains about Yor at work.

Fiona's thoughts — Anya learns about Fiona's feelings for Loid

The two are interrupted when Loid and the rest of the Forgers return after seeing that it will rain. Loid is surprised to see Fiona and talks with her in secret code. Fiona criticizes Loid's handling of Operation Strix, but he pushes back. Upon reading Fiona's mind, Anya learns that she is deeply in love with Loid and believes she would be a better fit as the wife in Operation Strix. While Yor prepares drinks for everyone, Fiona's comments weigh on her as she imagines Loid abandoning her and marrying Fiona. While the group drinks together, Anya is amused by Fiona's thoughts and accidentally spills her cup of cocoa. Fiona scoffs at her carelessness and imagines doing strict training with Anya to transform her into a Stella Star procurement machine. Anya becomes terrified and refuses to let Fiona become her mother, deciding to cling to Yor and pamper her with compliments.

Yor is touched by Anya's praise and promises to try harder for the family. While watching Loid reassuring Yor, Fiona remembers when he instructed her not to show her true feelings. Having observed Twilight's many past disguises, she can see that his smile with the Forgers is at least genuine. Fiona quickly excuses herself, and Loid decides to walk her to the station as she does not have an umbrella. Outside, Fiona informs Loid of their joint mission. As she turns towards Loid with a sad expression, she thanks the rain for hiding her emotions. Fiona resolves to show Loid how capable she is in their next mission and hopes he will see that she is the only one fit to be his wife.^[1]

FIRST FIT OF JEALOUSY[]

Just before her bedtime, Anya and Bond watch the cartoon Bear Squad, and the former becomes distressed when the penguin character dies. As such, Anya sleeps with her penguin plush for the night, but Bond tears it up in jealousy. In the morning, the Forgers discover Anya's torn-up plush and quickly identify Bond as the culprit. Hurt by Bond's violence, Anya says she hates him. Yor offers to fix the plush but rips it up even more, to Anya's dismay. Loid says he will buy a new plush, but Anya protests since it was a gift from him, so he decides to fix it. After Loid gives the mended penguin to Anya, Bond approaches her with a bag of peanuts in his mouth as an apology. With Loid's help, Anya forgives Bond, who also makes peace with the penguin plush. Watching them reconcile, Loid wishes that East-West relations could be mended just as easily.^[4]^{[note 1]}

Fiona reflects on how being with his family has led Loid to develop inappropriate emotions and has worsened him as a spy. Regardless, she finds this new version of him endearing and is still determined to usurp the wife position from Yor. At the hospital, Fiona gives Loid the overview of their mission: acquire the painting Lady In The Sun from the world-renowned art collector Cavi Campbell. The painting, previously owned by Ostanian Colonel Erik Zacharis, is rumored to be the key to a collection of documents eponymously called the "Zacharis Dossier," which allegedly has information on war crimes by the East and West and could reignite the war. The agents hope to retrieve the dossier before the Eastern government learns of its existence and gets it for themselves.

As the painting is kept beneath Cavi's mansion with tight security, Fiona reveals that she has an infiltration plan. A disguised Fiona and Loid enter an underground tennis tournament called the "Campbelldon," hosted by Cavi. The winners can take one item of their choice from his art collection, which Fiona believes is safer than trying to steal the painting from him. As part of her plan to get Loid to see her as the better fit for the wife role in Strix, she registers herself and Loid as a married couple, "Twain and Nafalia Foney."

The First Match: The Foneys vs. Walson and Bobble[]

The agents' first opponents are Walson and Bobble, who are famous ex-professional tennis players. Though Loid says he only did a little practice in preparation, he surprises everyone by winning the first game by himself. Walson and Bobble are shocked and target Fiona in the next game as they have yet to see her play, but she also displays her superior skill. After Loid compliments her, Fiona eagerly continues showing off her skills and wins the rest of the match by herself, bringing Walson and Bobble to their knees in defeat. Cavi and his associates watch the game from their balcony and discuss how the newcomers have shaken things up. One of them believes the pair will have trouble against his Bolic Brothers, who will be testing his company's new drug, which transforms the brothers from scrawny, skinny men to large, hulking musclemen. After seeing their new opponents, Loid questions whether this was really risk-free, to which Fiona simply tells him they need to do their best.^[5]

The Second Match: The Foneys vs. The Bolic Brothers[]

While Anya and Bond play tennis with Yor at the park near their home, Yor is lost in thought, contemplating Loid and Fiona's relationship and what it could mean for her. Hearing Yor's worried thoughts, Anya tells her she has nothing to worry about. Yor wonders if Anya knows what she is thinking, but Anya redirects her suspicion by saying that Loid will win the tennis tournament and bring home the trophy. Yor smiles and cheers him on with Anya.

At the Campbelldon, Loid and Fiona face off against the Bolic Brothers. When Loid points out the drastic change in their appearance, Fiona explains that anything goes in the tournament, from modified rackets to drugs. After intimidating the audience with their brute strength, the Bolic Brothers approach Loid and insult him. While Loid is unfazed, Fiona snaps, leading her to single-handedly dominate the match and beat the brothers with smash shots. As the Bolics' manager cries about his secret weapons being ruined, the others wonder if even Cavi is worried after seeing the Foneys' skill, which he denies.

The Final Match: The Foneys vs. The Campbell Twins[]

The agents continue to make their way up to the finals, with Fiona making lots of flashy plays to impress Loid. Before the match, they are taken to a waiting room where they discuss their next opponents: Carrol and Kim Campbell, Cavi's son and daughter. While Fiona is confident in their victory, Loid notices her bruised hand and tells her to get herself under control before she gets herself killed. Fiona follows his order while thinking how great it is to have him fret over her. Suddenly, a colorless and odorless gas begins filling the room. Realizing this is the Campbells' attempt to hinder their abilities, Loid tries to open the door but finds it locked on the other side. To avoid garnering suspicion, the agents stay in the room and, while talking in Morse code, try to prevent themselves from taking in as much gas as possible.

At the start of the final match, the odds are in the Foneys' favor, but Cavi confidently bets ten million dalc on his children. In the first game, the Campbells use modified rackets to overpower the Foneys. However, as the effects of the gas weaken, the Foneys make a comeback during the second game. In response, Carrol discreetly orders the workers to manipulate the arena, which Loid and Fiona quickly notice.^[6] Overcoming the trick, Loid and Fiona win the second game and tie the scores. Carrol prepares a sniper hiding in the ducts to shoot the Foneys during the next game. As Fiona prepares to serve a shot, Loid sees Carrol signaling with his tongue and spots a glint from the ducts behind them. Loid saves Fiona by tackling her to the ground as he takes the bullet, which surprises everyone, even Fiona. Loid reveals the sniper's presence to Fiona and that he prepared a bulletproof vest under his shirt, which amazes her. Suspecting most of the tournament staff to be under Cavi's payroll, the agents decide to avoid any disruption to their match that could risk their chances of getting the painting and try to dodge the sniper's shots.

When the game resumes, Loid baits the sniper to take a shot, then staggers to the side before finishing his serve. The shocked sniper calls all staff in the arena to hinder the Foneys. Despite the added interference, the agents continue to play around them while keeping the advantage, shocking the crowd with their seemingly bizarre movements as they play. In the end, Loid makes the final shot against Carrol, and thus the Foneys win the championship match. Afterward, Carrol approaches Loid. Realizing that they were aware of their tricks but still won, Carrol tearfully confesses his disappointment in himself. Loid encourages Carrol to work hard to hone his skills and become a great player one day. Watching their interaction, Cavi tears up seeing how much his son has grown. One of Cavi's men interrupts him and whispers a message to him, which Loid notices.

Loid and Fiona Mission Success — Loid and Fiona successfully complete their mission

After the game, the Foneys pick the Lady in the Sun as their reward, but Cavi appears to tell them he cannot give it to them due to circumstances beyond his control. Fiona and Loid realize that Cavi received a call from the SSS, who have gotten the same intel and are on their way to pick it up as they speak. While Fiona sees Cavi's art collection, Loid disguises himself as Cavi's butler to swap the Lady in the Sun with a fake. After the SSS takes the fake, Loid and Fiona take their leave. Seeing the secret code on the painting, they decide to bring it to HQ for analysis and high-five over their successful mission.^[7]

Yor vs. Fiona[]

Episode 23-6 — Fiona challenges Yor to a tennis match

As Fiona drives Loid home, she wonders if their mission made him see how she is a more suitable wife and partner. Loid requests to be dropped off at a park, where the agents see Yor with Anya and Bond. Fiona steps out of her car and greets Yor, then asks if she plays tennis. Yor explains that the family practiced together the other day, and Loid thanks them for their help in winning the tournament. Believing that she would have helped Loid achieve further greatness, Fiona challenges Yor to a game of tennis. While she claims to Loid that she wants to test Yor for Operation Strix, Fiona plans to crush her and have her relinquish her role as the mother. On the other hand, Yor believes if she declines or loses, Loid will report her to the SSS for being a weak tennis player and replace her with Fiona, so she accepts the challenge.

Agreeing with Fiona to go all out, Yor starts with a powerful serve but seemingly misses. However, the ball quickly dices into small pieces. Yor decides to hold back a little if she wants to hit the ball and prepares to make another serve. While Fiona tries to process what just happened, Yor makes her serve, which moves faster than sound and in a perfectly straight line. Fiona tries her best to return it but struggles to push forward. While Fiona is determined not to lose to Yor, she fails as the ball breaks through her racket. The defeated Fiona declares Yor the victor for now but will challenge her to a revenge match before driving off and tearfully swearing never to give up. Loid hopes Fiona did not give Yor the wrong idea, but he cannot imagine Yor being affected due to their sham marriage. To his surprise, Yor suddenly and enthusiastically exclaims her victory to him, then walks away in a huff.

Later, Loid meets with Sylvia, who gives him the Zacharis Dossier in the form of Erik Zacharis's diary. Reading it, Loid learns that the secret Zacharis was hiding was his collection of starlet photos. As the collection drove a wedge between him and his wife, he locked it away to protect their marriage. The WISE Agent explains that before the war's end, Zacharis hosted Western diplomats at a musical performance and made them swear to secrecy so his wife would not find out; over the years, the story was embellished into the current rumor. Loid is astounded that he went through all that trouble for some postcards, but Sylvia tells him to consider this a victory as it was not a threat to spark another war. Finding a picture of Zacharis smiling with his family, Loid contemplates the notion that any lie is justified in the name of peace. On his way home, Loid goes to a bakery and orders an apple tart and a slice of caramel nutcake for Yor and Anya, respectively. Back at home, Yor sits on the couch with a dazed expression. Meanwhile, Fiona trains in the mountains with a large rock tied to a stick, roaring while the wildlife watches from the side.^[8]

The Role of a Mother and Wife[]

Overhearing the neighbors gossip that he is cheating on Yor, Loid fears the worst. To resolve things, he decides to explain his relationship with Fiona to Yor on a night out while leaving Anya and Bond at home under Franky's care. Loid takes Yor to a bar, where she assumes she will be replaced by Fiona, who she believes Loid genuinely loves. Wanting Loid to be happy, Yor decides to leave of her own volition and tries to tell him, but cannot bring herself to speak due to her own feelings. Seeking strength through liquid courage, Yor downs her and Loid's drinks, but when she becomes drunk, she asks Loid if he is in love with Fiona.

Loid tries to explain things, but Yor does not listen to him and sulks as she compares herself to Fiona. Loid realizes Yor's jealousy and believes she has romantic feelings for him, then immediately takes advantage of the situation by attempting a honey trap on her. Loid proposes getting married for real but gets cut off when Yor kicks him in the chin in embarrassment and sends him flying. While Loid gracefully lands on his feet, he interprets Yor's powerful kick as rejection and concludes that she does not have romantic feelings for him after all. Trying to make sense of what just happened, Loid wonders if being with Yor has thrown him off balance as he loses consciousness.

While asleep, Loid hears the lullaby his mother sang to him when he was young and wakes up to see himself resting on Yor's lap while she sings the same song. Still believing that Loid wants to move on from her, Yor apologizes for her incompetence as a wife. In response, Loid tells her about his mother, how despite being unable to remember her face, he remembers feeling safe around her because she was strong and connects this to Anya's relationship with Yor. Loid tells Yor that he does not intend to replace her with Fiona and wants her to continue being the Forgers' mother and wife, and the two reconcile as she accepts.

The Forgers and Franky have tea — Yor finds her place with the Forgers

While waiting for Loid and Yor to return home, Franky suddenly asks Anya if she likes her parents, to which she replies that she loves them. When Loid and Yor arrive, Anya asks if they were late "smooching" but stops after seeing Loid with a swelled-up chin, which she and Franky quickly tease him for. While making tea for everyone, Yor thinks about how she has found a place she is unwilling to leave behind. In the morning day, Yor has forgotten everything that happened yesterday, and she and the dismayed Loid end up having the same conversation all over again.^[9]
