Spy x Family Wiki
You did a great job today. That was impressive. That said… you have to be more careful. Because there is someone else back home who'd be heartbroken if anything happened to you. I'm sorry about before, your working duties should always come second. I want you to think of yourself as a member of the Forger Family, first and foremost.
Loid Forger to Bond[1]

Bond Forger (ボンド・フォージャー, Bondo Fōjā?) is one of the main characters of the SPY x FAMILY series. He is the pet of the Forger Family. Formerly known as Subject 8 (実験体8号, Jikkentai 8-gō?, lit. "Experimental Subject no. 8"),[2][3] Bond was used for experiments that resulted in him gaining precognition abilities.

Appearance

Bond is a large dog of an indeterminate breed with fluffy white fur and black paws, noted by Anya to resemble the gloves and shoes of Bondman. His large stature, long coat, color, and the shape of his snout suggest he is mostly Great Pyrenees, and he is large enough for Anya Forger to comfortably ride on. His eyes are small and dark, with small ears that usually droop down. When his fur is wet, his body is revealed to be much thinner than his fur suggests, and for some reason, it also affects his bark.[6]

Bond usually wears a collar in the style of a bow tie, given by Anya after she came up with his name.

Personality

Despite his dark background, Bond is shown to be a very kind dog, as he uses his precognition abilities to help others who find themselves in danger in his visions, from rescuing a child from being hit by a falling board to assisting Anya in preventing the death of Loid Forger. He also helps Anya to retrieve her favorite pair of gloves from a fierce dog by intimidating him. However, he is also shown to be overzealous and quick to seek gratification, often resulting in him acting prematurely and causing the misfortunes he tries to prevent.

Bond is also shown to have a petty and jealous streak, destroying Anya's beloved stuffed penguin when he felt it was getting more attention from Anya than himself. He did apologize to Anya, however, by fetching her a bag of peanuts after seeing how badly this act had upset her. While they did make up afterward, Bond continues to be jealous whenever Anya gets a new toy that she shows off to the rest of the family.

Bond gets used to being a family member

Due in part to his past as a lab rat and the abuse he suffered in Project Apple, Bond is somewhat unnerved by dog training techniques. The amount of time he spent there was so long that he was initially unfamiliar with the simple act of playing, as he remained mostly stationary during his first trip to the dog park. After being taken in by the Forger family, Bond has gained a comfortable life filled with love and care, which he reciprocates in his desire to protect the family.

Abilities and Skills

Bond's time as a research experiment left him with precognitive abilities and above-average intelligence for a dog. He is capable of understanding human speech.

Bond's vision of the Forgers without Loid

In one of Bond's Precognitions, he sees a future without Loid in the Forger Family

Precognition: Bond gained precognitive abilities from the experiments done to him, allowing him to briefly see from a few minutes to a few hours into the future.[3] These visions take the form of an old television screen, and Bond is even able to hear what happens in these moments. This power is indicated to be active whenever his ears suddenly twitch and perk up. Bond's precognition is not absolute, and the future he sees can be changed if he takes a certain course of action. Notably, Anya acted upon Bond's precognition to prevent the death of Loid and the outbreak of civil war. Bond has once received a vision of black static, which he interpreted as a premonition of his death.[7]

Enhanced Speed and Agility: Bond has showcased to be very fast in running and can do so for long periods, allowing him to cover several grounds around the town. He has been shown to be able to outrun Yor[8] and is athletic enough to perform a flying kick on an adult.[7]

Enhanced Smell: Being a dog, Bond has a highly attuned sense of smell, being able to detect Loid's scent while he was on the other side of the city. He was also trained to help detect explosives and flammable chemicals.

Basic Combat Training: Due to his past as a research subject for military purposes, Bond has likely been trained in basic combat abilities. In addition, Bond has received some training from Loid in incapacitating potential threats and has shown to be quite effective at bringing down full-grown adults.

Weaknesses

Lack of Control Over His Power: Bond appears to have no control over his precognition, causing him to have visions spontaneously, and he can be shown different ones in a consecutive manner during a short period of time. This often causes him problems when he tries to prevent issues he foresees from happening, but it sometimes ends up being that he was going to cause the event in visions during his efforts.[9]

Trivia

  • Bond greatly resembles the Great Pyrenees breed.
  • Anya named Bond after her favorite cartoon hero Bondman, noting that his personality and appearance greatly resembles the fictional detective.
    • Bond was supposed to be named "Peanuts," likely after Anya's favorite food, but the name highly reminded people of another white dog, so they changed it to Bond.[10] Another name planned for Bond was Furry.[11]
  • The bow tie collar Anya gave Bond is a reference to the iconic bow ties of the fictional spy James Bond.
  • The terrorist operation that introduced Bond to the story is loosely based on the Red Army's Anti-tank dog program, with the twist of having Nazi-inspired terrorists adopt it.
  • Bond thinks that Anya smells the best, but he also likes Yor's scent.[5]
  • Bond's chair, featured on the cover of the fourth volume cover, is a Ball Chair designed by Eero Aarnio.
  • In the anime, Bond's Japanese voice actor, Kenichirō Matsuda, also shares the role of the narrator.
