Summary[]
Broadening Horizons[]
With the marriage cover established, Yor moves into the Forger family's new home. To prepare for Eden Academy's admissions interview to proceed with Operation Strix, Loid does a mock exam with Yor and Anya, which they fail terribly. Loid decides to take the two for a day on the town to participate in various cultural activities and familiarize themselves with life as an upper-class family. Throughout their trip, Loid despairs the success of his mission, and Yor, noticing this, takes them to a park to relax. Upon witnessing a purse snatching, the Forgers use their combined efforts to apprehend the thief and return the purse to its rightful elderly owner, who sees that the three make for a wonderful family. The Forgers return home and repeat the mock exam, to better results, leaving Loid more optimistic about the mission.[2]
The Admissions Exams: The First Phase[]
The Forgers arrive at Eden for the admissions interview, and Loid immediately realizes they are under observation by the faculty, judging their social interactions. With each successive test, Loid's precautions proved successful by impressing the academy professor in charge of the selection process, Professor Henry Henderson, who observes them from an upper floor. However, when the school zoo starts stampeding from the stables into the crowd, Henderson is shocked at the turn, while Loid misperceives the event as another test. The Forgers defuse the situation, stunning Henderson with their elegance as he personally thanks Loid, and so the Forgers make their way to the next phase of the admissions process.[3]
The Admissions Exams: The Second Phase[]
The final phase of the admissions is the family interview. While Loid is admittedly nervous, he resolves to succeed for the sake of his mission. During their interview, the Forgers play out their rehearsed answers while enduring Professor Murdoch Swan's selectively targeted questioning, which Anya mind-reads as Swan's bitterness about his own failed marriage. When Anya's mind-reading causes a slight misunderstanding, Loid saves the interview by phrasing it as Anya's ambition to climb the academic ladder.
After Professor Swan criticizes Yor for her role as the stepmother and if Anya prefers her birth mother over Yor, the question coupled with Loid's postulation of her birth parents, unknowingly causes the little girl to cry. Swan continues his taunts, which enrage Yor and Loid, with the latter smashing the table between him and Swan. Before leaving with the family, Loid expresses his disgust at Swan for deliberately making a child cry. Swan's prideful stance as the son of the previous headmaster irritates Henderson, who strikes Swan squarely for his disrespect. At home, the Forgers fear Anya's rejection and contemplate their future. They decide to remain optimistic anyway but are quickly discouraged by a bad omen of their family portrait falling from the wall.[4]
Admissions Success![]
As the Forgers return to Eden, they are crestfallen upon seeing that Anya did not make the final admissions list. However, Professor Henderson covertly shares that Anya is on the waiting list of students at the top to take another student's place, thanks to his discretion. Later, the Forgers receive a call from the school confirming that Anya got a spot and will be enrolled, and they celebrate. Shortly after, Franky invites himself into their home to join the celebrations. At dinner, a drunk Franky helps Anya goad Loid into fulfilling her fantasy of being a princess rescued from a castle as she saw from her favorite cartoon.
Loid takes the family to Münk to rent Newston Castle, after which he calls in several dozen undercover WISE agents to play the role of attendees while he plays as the hero against Franky, the villain. In the middle of their standoff, a drunk Yor plays "a witch" and nearly overwhelms Loid with martial arts, but falls over and knocks herself out. Loid effortlessly defeats Franky and rescues Anya, who thanks him for her new life and promises to do good at school. In exchange, Loid congratulates Anya on passing. The next day, Loid's status report on Phase 1 of Operation Strix is sent to WISE HQ, along with the hefty expenses report.[5]
